RIP Wild Man Fischer

Larry Fischer died yesterday. Larry was a severely mentally ill artist discovered by Frank Zappa in the 60′s. He came to be known as “Wild Man Fischer” as his fame grew and his sickness progressed. Larry was a manic-depressive, paranoid-schizophrenic cult music icon. He always felt the fame he deserved had passed him by until filmakers Jeremy Lubin and Josh Rubin put out the documentary, “Derailroaded” which put Larry back in the spotlight. Larry’s life was filled with a lot of turmoil and a lot of very talented people. Celebrities like Frank Zappa, Gail Zappa, Weird Al Yankovic, Dr.Demento, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Solomon Burke and Rosemary Clooney are featured throughout the documentary. Rest in Peace Larry .

How do some people get so happy ?

Hey here’s an idea- Now that Larry is dead why doesn’t Gail re-release “An Evening With Wildman Fischer” … we’d get to hear his music and Gail can keep all the money! She wouldn’t have to pay a nickle to a dead guy, right??? She would LOVE that!

I don’t think commercial success was a big priority to Frank. He loved weird out there stuff. I think he just heard someone who had talent and he thought the guy should have a chance to reach his potential. I don’t think he realized how dangerous Larry was.
On a side note, I love the Frank Zappa and Dr. Demento puppets.

yeah he probably helped fischer get somewhat known etc. but anyone with a modicum of intelligence would understand that if you are dealing with an unstable and mentally ill person, its like handling nitroglycerine on trampolines. what did he expect from a schizophrenic? thanks? cheery good times?? “lets have lunch at the waldorf after tennis”?

went to a party at zappa’s 2401 house one time and there were caves behind the back yard. exploring one of the caves i find larry (wildman) inside. hadn’t seen him in years but he seemed to remember me and was quite friendly. hung out for a little while and went back in the house. although i liked larry he always scared me a little. i’d see him at the beach around ’62 or 3. he had a wieght lifting brother who looked like a cross between a bullfrog and a bulldog. thanx for posting this.

@Informatisse The other thing about him is that you dont seem to realise that Frank only saw the good in people and Fischer seemed interesting till the point of almost killing his daughter (seriously dont you fucking get that?) People talk rubbish about the money they get and they dont even do anthing but play what HE made. Im sure they made a pretty good living and he took care of them but im pretty sure they’d expect alot MORE money for doing the same thing over and over. Im just saying !

@Informatisse I had to read you comment three times because i think your absolutely wrong in the way you acuse frank of being a person that only cares about money. Remember that Frank didn’t do drugs and when you want to achieve something and the people you work with do drugs, you can clearly see why Frank would just leave (pull the plug)..

I’m stunned to see how zappa could be so naive.
Like “Hey, this guy who spend years in a mental institution threw a bottle and almost killed my baby, I thought he was cool”.

Yeah, no kidding, lol. And this story about money is not unique, there is many people (Beefheart, Carl Black, Ponty, and others…) who had salary problems with him.

By the way he was a god, a master, and a father. I understand him even if those strange parts of his behavior always surprise me.

Overall I think he’s less talented than he thinks he is, but more famous that he thinks.
To quote my Mother, he’s more to be pitied than laughed at.
You should buy or at least hire out Derailroaded to make your own mind up.
